Let’s continue with FUEL talk week, shall we? If you missed the first recipe, just click here for a tasty porridge (breakfast fuel)!
I’m going to share a little story with you that might make you cringe. Cringe in an “oh yuck” kind of way, but trust me when I say it’s worth tell it. haha!
For the past 10 years my husband (aka the kiwi Cotter) has raced and trained for triathlon all through out the summer. This would mean swim sessions every morning, 4-6 hour rides in 100F heat, and running hill repeats at 1pm in the hot Texas sun. Yes, he was crazy. But that man loved (still does) triathlon and did everything he could to work at performing his best. I, on the other hand, would worry that he was going pass out at any point due to heat exhaustion. Hey, can you blame me?
It was about this time every year that the kiwi would try to find a post workout drink that A –> he craved and B--> he could drink down right away. If you know anything about training in the heat, then you know your appetite kinda fades when you are overheated, yet you still need to replenish those muscles! This is because the body is working hard to cool down, so digestion is not it’s top priority. Sweating and breathing is! Anyway, back to my cringe story. Yes, the post workout drink of choice. The only thing he wanted after a hot run or ride was a slushy. But not just any slushy, one combined with coke and orange gatorade. Did you know that 7-eleven actually has both? In fact, I think there was beer mixed in there once too. ACK! Enter cringe face!
Needless to say, I figured I better start coming up with my own post HOT RUN/WORKOUT electrolyte citrus slushy for him to remedy this “oh yuck” concoction.
Hence this recipe with his two favorite fruits! But let me dig a little deeper here into the nutrition of it, ok?
If you think about it, most citrus electrolyte drinks contain a sugar (glucose to restore glycogen), Vitamin C, water, and Mineral like potassium and magnesium. All which help balance out the imbalance of nutrients/water lost when you train hard or sweat a lot. Except a lot of those drink also have aded sugar, chemicals, and preservatives; which the body doesn’t recognize. Hmm… not so good there.
My plan was make a drink with even more nutrients and with ALL natural ingredients. Yes, it can be done!
Here’s what’s in my homemade electrolyte citrus slushy and WHY!
- tons of ice (water for rehydration and cooling)
- kiwi fruit – fresh or frozen, your choice! Kiwi fruit is high in vitamins C and E. Two medium kiwis contain 230% of your RDA for Vitamin C, which is almost double that of an orange. recommended daily allowance of vitamin C, almost twice that of an orange. Kiwi fruit are also high in magnesium and potassium. It even has more potassium that a banana! Both of magnesium and potassium are essential minerals crucial for the body and muscle function. And Potassium is just one example of electrolytes needed here.
- Orange and fresh squeezed orange juice – Rich in Vitamin C for immunity
- Honey – Natural glucose to restore glycogen in muscles
- Sea Salt – Contain Sodium, another example of electrolyte needed when rehydrating.
- Lime Juice- Vitamin C
See, makes sense now, right? And NO ADDITIVES! YAY!

Notes
Depending on how much you sweat, you can add more or less salt and honey. For low sugar option, use Bai 5 clementine drink versus orange juice.
Now, I do have one more option here. For those of you looking for the same electrolyte benefits but with a little less sugar. Or maybe you want this slushy for more of a healthy snack or breakfast, then Bai 5 Costa Clementine is perfect! It still contains Vitamin C but is also packed with an antioxidant rich super fruit; the coffee fruit! Remember my love for this drink from this smoothie recipe? It’s the reason why I made this “lighter” version with Bai 5 as well. Same great health benefits and flavor!
You can check out all the other flavors HERE as well. P.S the molokai coconut is awesome too!
Well folks, that’s all I got for today. Let me know if you give this citrus slushy a whirl!
I love it! But then again, it is 100F here today, so I may be a little bias when it comes to any COLD drink! Haha!
